It starts out with minor symptoms like bleeding gums in\ndowntown Portland, but if left untreated, you open yourself up to major health\nproblems down the road, such as teeth that become loose and even fall out! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common symptoms of gum disease include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bleeding gums <\/li><li>Bad breath or bad taste in your mouth <\/li><li>Loose teeth <\/li><li>Red or tender gums <\/li><li>Receding gumline, resulting in teeth that appear\n\u201clonger\u201d <\/li><li>Pimples, bumps, or sores in the gums <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens If You Don\u2019t Treat Gum Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bacteria associated with gum disease may create pockets in\nbetween your teeth and your gums. Through these pockets, they can enter your\nbloodstream and travel to other areas of your body. From there, you\u2019re more at\nrisk of contracting other health issues, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Heart disease <\/li><li>Diabetes <\/li><li>Stroke <\/li><li>Alzheimer\u2019s <\/li><li>Birth complications in pregnant women <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can You Prevent Gum Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrating National Gum Care Month is pretty easy if you\nstick to the following steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Visiting your dentist in downtown Portland every\nsix months for a checkup and cleaning <\/li><li>Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes\nat a time with fluoridated toothpaste <\/li><li>Flossing at least once a day <\/li><li>Quitting smoking and\/or chewing tobacco <\/li><li>Avoiding consuming too many sweet foods <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Your Dentist Treat Gum Disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If gum disease is caught in the early stage, called\ngingivitis, it can usually be reversed with an increased oral hygiene regimen\nand a course of antibiotics. However, once it reaches the advanced stage, known\nas periodontitis, scaling and root planing may be needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scaling is when your dentist uses an ultrasonic device to break\napart any plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth. Following that, they\nwill perform root planing. This involves smoothing out the rough areas on the\nroots of your teeth where bacteria like to build up and wreak havoc. These procedures\ndecrease gum inflammation easily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you may have gum disease, it\u2019s important to\ncontact your dentist right away.
